30 November 2011

Charles Allen CBE, London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) Board Member and Chair of Nations & Regions, made a special visit to Surrey Sports Park last week to look at how the legacy for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is starting to take shape.
As a part of a line up of visits throughout the day Charles joined a group of delegates at Surrey Sports Park for a Get Set Educational Programme event, celebrating the best of Get Set initiatives in the region. Get Set is the official London 2012 education programme for schools, colleges and education providers across the UK.
As well as joining in a series of workshops, Charles addressed teachers from across the South East, thanking them for their ongoing commitment to Get Set and explaining the importance of the programme to the 2012 Games. Here, he also received a performance of the newly Inspire Marked ‘Olympic Song’, sung by pupils from two Portsmouth schools in the Get Set Network, St John's Cathedral Catholic Primary School and St Paul's Catholic Primary School.
Charles also got the opportunity to see Surrey Sports Park first hand during a tour of the facilities, which will be the pre games training camp next year for a number of teams including the Nigerian National Olympic Committee (NOC) and National Paralympic Committee (NPC), the Singapore NOC and GB Women’s Basketball.
Paul Blanchard, CEO of Surrey Sports Park commented: “‘The visit went very well and was an opportunity for Surrey Sports Park to show Charles Allen the impact we are having on local and national sport and how we can support major sporting events in the future.’
Oona Muirhead, Chair of the South East Partnership, London 2012 Nations and Regions Member for the South East and CEO of the South East England Development Agency commented: “We hope that Charles’ visit to the South East has demonstrated just how much is happening in the region to create a lasting legacy ahead of London 2012.
“The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is drawing ever closer and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure everyone involved has a truly unforgettable experience”.
