1500 students attend Active Freshers’ Fayre

Last Saturday saw over 1500 students from the University of Surrey attend the annual Active Freshers’ Fayre at Surrey Sports Park.

Over 30 sports were on offer for students to try out before they joined, including a visit from England Lacrosse to assist in starting up a team.

Almost all sessions were extremely well attended, while many people enjoyed the sun and a barbeque on the terrace with entertainment provided by GU2 Radio from the Students’ Union.

All attendees were given the chance to enter a free prize draw, with the lucky winners bagging themselves a Surrey Sports Park membership and Harlequins Rugby and Guildford Heat basketball tickets.

Trung- VP Sport and Recreation from the University of Surrey Students’ Union- said: “The vision for Active Freshers Fayre’ was to make the event like a big open day rather than a careers fare with stalls where students could actively try out different sports clubs in one day and under one roof. I wanted to give students opportunity to  try out sports which they have never thought about giving a go.

I am very proud of the efforts of everyone involved in making Active Freshers’ Fayre what it was and in making my vision come true, especially given that participation had increased and that clubs have been benefiting from the event even more.

A special thanks goes to Kara Glassborow, the Student Sport Coordinator at the Students' Union, for organising this wonderful event.

I am looking forward to next year being a bigger and better event with an enhanced vision to make the day more than just an open day but as a big social sports event!”

Osama Salih, President of the Students’ Union, echoed Trung’s satisfaction: “I was delighted to see so many students come down to Surrey Sports Park to get involved in some of the sports clubs Team Surrey has to offer. Over 1500 students got out of bed on the Saturday morning to see what Surrey has to offer which made it a great experience for the clubs, Surrey Sports Park and the Students’ Union. I hope this participation level continues and students find something to be involved in and belong to throughout their time here.”

Mark Garfoot, Surrey Sports Park’s Performance Sport Manager, said: “It was a fantastic event and great to see Surrey Sports Park full of students playing sport and enjoying the sun. I was really pleased to see how well the clubs embraced the Fayre, clearly publicising their sessions well as well as putting on such good sessions.

It looks to have set the tone for what promises to be a great year for sport at Surrey!”
