Jordan Brand Classic basketball tour hits Surrey Sports Park

02 March 2011

Forty of the best 15-16 year old basketball players from all over Europe will train and compete at Surrey Sports Park this weekend as the Jordan Brand Classic International Tour hits the UK, with the tour culminating in a free to attend ‘All-Star’ game at the venue on Sunday 6 March at 6.30pm.

This year marks the fifth year that the Jordan Brand Classic will feature an International tour as part of the event. Players on the tour will train and compete to earn a spot in the International Game at this April’s Jordan Brand Classic in Charlotte, USA.  Only the best players will be invited to join the Classic in the United States, along with other top players from around the world.

Each year in order to select the international participants; Jordan Brand invites 40 of the top prospects in Europe for a fierce two-day training camp with some of the top basketball-training experts from the U.S. Basketball training experts Christopher Thomas & Ganon Baker will be holding strength, conditioning and skill development sessions each day along with 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 competitions.

The prospects compete for one of the 10 coveted Most Valuable Player awards and an opportunity to come to the U.S. and compete in the Jordan Brand Classic. The European players are joined by six players from other regions of the world to complete the International game rosters.

Over the past three years Jordan Brand’s elite training camps have been held in Athens, Greece, Istanbul, Turkey, Rome, Italy, and Vilnius, Lithuania.

Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, the Jordan Brand Classic alumni roster boasts some of world basketball’s most recognizable names, including Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Amar’e Stoudemire, Dwight Howard, Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose.

Commenting on hosting the JBC International Tour, Surrey Sports Park Projects Manager Gems Leaming said, “We are so excited to be hosting some of Europe’s most talented young basketballers and such a prestigious basketball tour event as the Jordan Brand Classic. The Classic has unearthed some of the NBA’s finest talents over the years and it’s great that the JBC team have brought this fantastic tour to the UK and to Surrey Sports Park.”

Basketball fans wishing to attend the Jordan Brand Classic ‘All-Star’ game on Sunday 6 March at 6.30pm can watch for free by simply coming to Surrey Sports Park on the evening. Seats will be available on a first-come-first-served basis with a capacity crowd of 800. Find out more about the event here.
