Storm go down 42-47 to Mavericks

10 February 2011

stormvmavericks

Surrey Storm came unstuck against a solid Mavericks side on Monday night going down 42-47 at Surrey Sports Park.

A sell-out crowd of over 900 netball fans created a truly special match atmosphere in a tense night which saw two of the country's top Fiat Netball Superleague clubs go head to head, and there wasn't much between the two sides throughout.

Mavericks burst into life in the first quarter to open up a 5 point lead which Storm pushed throughout the game to try and overturn. Some good error forcing defence from Storm had the gap to just 2 points, but Storm just couldn't grasp the lead, and Mavericks won the quarter, 12 - 7.

No changes for the second quarter saw a more convincing Storm performance, a Tamsin Greenway tip gave the home side the chance to get two successive turnovers. Seaton calling injury time at 6 mins was a turning point, Storm clearly using the opportunity for rest to their advantage and coming back to within one goal with 4 minutes remaining. However, Mavericks came back with some impressive Brownfield shooting and whilst Storm won the quarter, they were still ahead 24-20.

The visitors made some changes mid-court, Buchanan moving across to C and Schmidt coming on at WD, but Storm stayed with their starting seven. Mavericks stretched their lead to 7 goals at times, the Storm defence partnership of Reid and Holland working hard to keep their tally as low as possible. But 11 goals went past to Storm's 10, Mavericks holding their lead, 30-35.

Storm mixed things up in the final quarter, Bello taking to court against her former club at WD, Seaton going into the D at Goal Defence and McHale replacing Cosentino at Goal Attack. The new combination in defence worked hard, combined with a great impact created by McHale and Dunn, but it was unfortunately too little too late, and a 12-12 draw for the quarter resulted in Mavericks winning the game by 5, 47-42.

Storm captain Tamsin Greenway said after the game, "Looking at the line ups, you would be silly to think that Mavericks couldn't have put 4 times that goal difference on the score sheet, so we have to be proud of what we have achieved. Saying that, we aren't the kind of team that take losing two games on the bounce lying down, so you can expect us to come out hard against Loughborough next Saturday fighting."

Tickets are still available for upcoming home matches versus Leeds Carnegie on Monday 28 February at 7.30pm, Loughbrough Lightning on Saturday 5 March at 7pm and Glasgow Wildcats on Friday 1 April at 7pm.
